In 1873, vivacious actress and spirit medium Sybil Ingram and her husband, Roderick Brooke, have a strange encounter with a mysterious woman. Weeks later, two strangers seek Sybil out and ask to communicate with her spirit. When her efforts are fruitless, Roderick proposes a wager to uncover the secret of the dead woman's identity. But he turns up information that suggests that Sybil, pursuing her own investigation, is in danger from a gang of women criminals.
