Seven months ago, Pallas Llewellyn was one of three women - strangers - staying a fateful night at Lucent Springs Hotel. That night, a series of disasters destroyed the hotel, but the women have no memory of their time there.
Now close friends, together they investigate cold cases, hoping to connect with others who have experienced what they have: forgotten encounters and enhanced psychic abilities.
After receiving a tip, Pallas travels to the small Californian college town of Carnelian, to explore an abandoned asylum. Once there she encounters a startling dark energy, and the man who tipped her off - Ambrose Drake.
Ambrose is certain he witnessed a murder, but without a body, no one believes him. But he's certain something terrible happened at the asylum the night he was there. Desperate, he enlists Pallas's help, only for her to realize that Ambrose, too, has a lost night that he cannot remember-one that may be connected to her own.
Pallas and Ambrose begin to investigate, and while the townsfolk are eager to share what they know, it turns out there are others who are not so happy about their questions - and someone is willing to kill to keep the truth from coming out.
